I also learnt that it used to be a blue screen. But people would always be wearing jeans so that wouldn't work so they eventually changed it to green screen.
We all picked a newspaper article and then read it out in front of the green screen. My article was one on a girl that had been saved by a heart valve transplant from a pig!
When it came to choosing a background for my green screen I wanted to choose something topical so I chose to be reporting from a hospital.

Green screen is a useful tool and many news studios are 'virtual' studios. It has to be used with caution and 'acknowledged' in news as you could not pretend to be somewhere you were not - look at the use when a reporter speaks in the studio and behind them they potentially use it to run the next VT or support with relevant graphics.
