Spaced- The Synopsis

Spaced. This present day take on everyday events in a dysfunctional couples life is a twist on the classic boy meet girl story. Struggling novelist Daisy meets aspiring comic book artist Tim in this quirky comedy program. They both find themselves homeless and realise they need each other more than they first thought. The loveable pair then have to pretend to be in a relationship to deceive loopy landlady Marsha in to thinking they are a professional couple that have been together for a long period of time, in order to get a flat. The series shows how Tim and Daisy build a relationship with each other and how they grow emotionally, accompanied by some very odd friends.
All this takes place in and around a block of flats in the north of London. Although a cramped one, the setting gives a very homely feeling and the audience feels like they know the characters already.

Daisy and Tim live above an anguished artist called Brian. Brian’s strange tendencies attract the attention of the alcoholic, self obsessed landlady Marsha, who live above the couple. Tim’s gun obsessed best friend, Mike, appears a lot in the series becoming a big part of the show with his idiotic behaviour helping Tim overcome the weird complications of everyday life. The character Twist also adds to the contrasting personas of Spaced. Twist is Daisy’s best friend and they share few qualities such as they are both big fantasists and like to make up stories. Twist comes across very ditsy and the airy fairy type.

The added pop culture references and alternative soundtrack that frequently crop up throughout the program add the sense of familiarity and the characters become more and more relatable and likeable through this, making it work amazingly. Using unusual camera shots and jump cuts, the program is made more exciting for the viewer and hold their attention for longer. The animated characters of this program makes this program different from any other present day comedies which adds to its likeability.

  1. Hi Maddie,
This a good attempt at a first synopsis. A lot of info is put across and a very nice introduction of the characters that really flows. Things to think about. The WAY you write a synopsis is really important. It should flow and interest the reader the way a short story would - yours does in places, but also in some areas it feels like just a list of elements. You need to be creative and make all the elements jump of the page - like in a story. Be concise, be clear.
Don't write things such as "making it work amazingly.." that's a review. let the reader work out if something is going to be amazing or not. You are selling the idea, not reviewing it.
Bring all this together for your meeting synopsis. hope that helps,
    simon
